A Philippines navy personnel was severely injured when China’s coast guard seized two Filipino ships on a resupply mission to an outpost on Second Thomas Shoal last week as China has ramped up actions targeting the Philippines in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, especially the use of “gray zone tactics”. India backed the Philippines on Friday amid a flaring of tensions in the South China Sea over China’s aggressive actions in recent weeks. “We oppose de stabilizing or unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo by force or coercion...and we underline the need for peaceful settlement of disputes,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a regular media without directly referring to China.

India's Deputy Representative to the United Nations, R Ravindra, said that it was Pakistan's “another habitual attempt” to divert attention from the “grave violations” against children that continue in their country on Thursday as he slammed Pakistan for its “baseless” and “politically motivated” remarks on Jammu and Kashmir during the United Nations Security Council's open debate on ‘Children and Armed Conflicts’.“Let me respond briefly in the interest of time to remarks which were, obviously, politically motivated and unfounded, made by one representative against my country. I categorically dismiss and condemn these baseless remarks with the contempt they deserve…This is nothing but another habitual attempt to divert attention from the grave violations against children that continue unabated in his own country, as highlighted in this year's Secretary General's report on children and armed conflict,” Ravindra said.

The visas issued to Chinese nationals by India has seen a sharp drop, with the number dropping from 200,000 visas issued in 2019-20 to just 2,000 in 2024. According to a Hindustan Times report, citing senior officials in the national security establishment and economic ministries, about 200,000 visas were issued to Chinese nationals in 2019 before the pandemic struck and the June 15, 2020 Galwan clash, and that this number was brought down to just 2,000 in 2024 after a structural screening of Chinese investments in India. According to the report, the government, however, has granted around 1,500 visas to Chinese nationals over the past eight months. Of these, around 1,000 visas were issued to meet the requirements of the Indian electronics industry. Another 1,000 visas are currently being processed, primarily for the electronics sector, following rigorous screening procedures. Despite the Indian government's efforts, including reducing corporate income tax and introducing a Rs 2 lakh crore production linked incentive (PLI) scheme across twelve sectors, the trade deficit with China widened to over $38.11 billion in the first five months of the current year. During January-May 2024, India managed to export only $8.93 billion worth of goods to China, while imports from Beijing totaled $47 billion.

India hit back at China Friday, calling the Dalai Lama a “revered religious leader” who was free to conduct his “religious and spiritual activities” in the country, after Beijing called the Tibetan leader a “political exile”, and not a “pure religious figure”. “The government of India’s position on His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been very clear and consistent. He is a revered religious leader and is deeply respected by the people of India. His Holiness is accorded due courtesies and freedom to conduct his religious and spiritual activities,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a regular press briefing. Earlier this week, a high-power bipartisan seven-member delegation from the US House of Representatives visited India and met with the Tibetan religious leader at his home in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. China opposed the visit and in a statement by its foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian Tuesday, said, “It’s known by all that the 14th Dalai Lama is not a pure religious figure, but a political exile engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the cloak of religion.”

China on Tuesday urged US President Joe Biden not to sign the Tibet policy bill, warning of "resolute measures", as it expressed “strong concern” over the visit of a high-level US Congress delegation to Dharamshala to meet the Dalai Lama. A bipartisan US congressional delegation, led by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaulis, is visiting India to strengthen bilateral ties and to meet the 88-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader. Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is part of the delegation that reached Dharamsala, in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, on Tuesday. Dharamsala is the seat of power for Tibet’s government in exile since the spiritual leader stepped into India six decades ago. The US House of Representatives voted 391-26 last Wednesday to approve the Promoting and Resolution to the Tibet-China Dispute Act, which was passed by the Senate, a media report said, adding, that the bill would direct funds to counter what it calls “disinformation” from Beijing about Tibet’s history, people and institutions. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, while reacting to the US delegation visit, told a media briefing here: “The 14th Dalai Lama is not a pure religious figure, but a political exile engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the cloak of religion.”

With reports suggesting that India, in response to China’s recent renaming of locations in Arunachal Pradesh, is planning to rename about 30 places within China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, let us talk about ‘consensus’ between India and China (not only about Taiwan and Xinjiang, but about Tibet), for which the posts have constantly been changed by Beijing. In October 1950, the People’s Liberation Army crossed the Upper Yangtze river and advanced into Kham Province of Eastern Tibet. A month later, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the then Deputy Prime Minister, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Patel was concerned about India’s northern borders and pointed a finger at the Indian Ambassador in Beijing: “The Chinese government has tried to delude us by professions of peaceful intention. My own feeling is that at a crucial period they manage to instil into our Ambassador a false sense of confidence in their so-called desire to settle the Tibetan problem by peaceful means. …The final action of the Chinese, in my judgement, is little short of perfidy. The tragedy of it is that the Tibetans put faith in us. …Our Ambassador has been at great pains to find an explanation or justification for Chinese policy and actions.”

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stated on Tuesday after assuming charge for a second straight term that India will focus on finding solutions to the border issues with China that has long strained ties between the neighbouring countries, They have engaged in a military standoff since July 2020 when at least 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese troops were killed in the worst clashes in five decades. India and China share a 3,800 km (2,400 mile) border – much of it poorly demarcated – over which the nuclear-armed nations also fought a war in 1962. Relations and problems with China and Pakistan were different, Jaishankar told reporters. “With regards to China there are still some issues at the border and our focus will be on how to solve them,” he said. India and Pakistan, which is also nuclear-armed, have fought three wars, including two over control of the disputed Kashmir region in the Himalayas.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has added Israel's military to a global list of offenders who have committed violations against children, said Israel's UN envoy Gilad Erdan, describing the decision as "shameful." Erdan said he was officially notified of the decision on Friday. The global list is included in a report on children and armed conflict that is due to be submitted to the UN Security Council on June 14. srael's Foreign Minister Israel Katz said the decision would impact the country's relations with the United Nations. Erdan said he was notified by Guterres' chief of staff and posted a video on social media of him responding to the decision during their phone call. "I am utterly shocked and disgusted by this shameful decision of the Secretary-General," said Erdan. "Israel's army is the most moral army in the world, so this immoral ecision will only aid the terrorists and reward Hamas. Guterres spokesperson Stephane Dujarric declined to comment.
