Tejashwi Yadav wrote on X, "Congratulations! Due to the double power of the double engine government in Bihar, only and only five bridges have collapsed in just nine days. The double engine NDA government of six parties, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has sent auspicious and bright wishes of Mangalraj to the people of Bihar on the collapse of five bridges in nine days." "The self-proclaimed honest people are calling the thousands of crores of rupees being lost by the public due to the collapse of bridges as “courtesy” rather than “corruption”," he added. "Why don't the truthful and incorruptible leaders, certified by the world champion Godi media as those who distribute orange certificates of corruption to the Opposition and are number one in all the rankings of partisan journalism open their mouths on these good governance feats?" he said.

52 years after 'illegal' discharge, IAF war veteran wins pension

The petitioner former sergeant Gopi Ram was enrolled in IAF as a regular combatant airman in the trade of radar operator, and on completion of training on Dec 10, 1964, joined Operational 43 Signal Unit. He actively participated in the India-Pakistan wars of 1965 and 1971 and also received decorations/medals. He completed nine years of service on Dec 26, 1971, and was abruptly discharged on March 28, 1972. Almost 52 years after an IAF war veteran was "illegally" discharged after only nine years of service, disentitling him from pension, the Punjab and Haryana HC has held that such an order could not have been passed "to the detriment and disadvantage of a defence personnel". After hearing his plea, HC observed that no reasons had been cited in the order discharging the petitioner, and held that he was entitled to "benefit of completing 15 years of service for the purpose of pension alone". The court found the AFT order "laconic", and said: "His discharge order having been quashed, he would be entitled to full pension on completion of his full service on attaining the age of 58 years."

In ‘Army villages’, empty grounds tell the tale of Agnipath’s toll
In 'Army villages', empty grounds tell the tale of Agnipath's toll

For this Jhunjhunu village, in Rajasthan’s Shekhawati region, the years can be divided as before and after Agnipath — the central ‘tour of duty’ scheme to enlist jawans in India’s defence forces that was rolled out in 2022. Agniveers will be enlisted for four years, after which 25% of the recruits will be retained in the services based on merit. For Dhanuri and many other villages in the region that have for decades been sending youths in droves to the forces to earn and serve till they retire, the four-year tenure was a rude shock. Before Agnipath was rolled out, the ground teemed with teenagers and youths in their early 20s sprinting and exercising on the sand to prepare for their entrance into the services, trainers keeping a hawk eye and barking instructions, boys egging each other on. Dhanuri wears that tag ‘village of soldiers’ with pride. But for how long? This is an anxiety that has been creeping up since 2022. There are similar ‘Army villages’ across north India — in the Himalayan terrain of Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal, Dehradun and Uttarkashi, the sun-baked plains of Haryana, and the sweeping expanse of Uttar Pradesh — where empty fields are a recurring sight.
